How to Create a Windows 98 Boot Disk From a Download

The Microsoft Windows 98 operating system is built on the older DOS operating system. Windows 98 installation is a two-step process. A Windows 98 boot floppy disk is required to first boot the computer into DOS to install CD drive support, and then the Windows 98 operating system is installed to the computer from the installation CD. Windows 98 bootable disk image files may be downloaded free of charge from several sites on the internet

Instructions

  1. Open an Internet browser.
  2. Navigate to one of the Windows 98 Boot Disk download sites like bootdisk.com.
  3. Click on the Windows 98 Boot Disk link to download the floppy disk image for the boot disk.
  4. Click "Save File" when prompted, to save the file to disk
  5. Double-click the file to extract the boot disk image. A small utility program will tell the user how to make the boot disk.
  6. Insert a blank, formatted floppy disk in the disk drive.
  7. Click the "Yes" button to confirm the formatting operation. The utility application will format the disk and copy the boot disk image files to the floppy. A notification dialog box will appear when finished.
  8. Test the disk by inserting it the the disk drive and rebooting the computer. If the computer boots into the Windows 98 installation utility, the boot disk was successfully created.
